Grassroots Leaders Gather For The Release Of Report On The Status Of Grassroots Organizations in Ontario

TORONTO, ONTARIOGrassroots leaders and volunteers from across Toronto and various parts of Ontario gathered at the Centre for Social Innovation on Tuesday night for the launch of Volunteer Toronto’s first large-scale research report “From The Bottom Up.”

The 70-page report provides a glimpse into the state of volunteer-run non-profits with small budgets across Ontario, highlighting their achievements and outlining the common characteristics, trends and themes among them.

Attendees represented a spectrum of groups from volunteer-run cat rescues to youth arts programs and residents associations.

“These groups of people, which we refer to as “grassroots groups,” play a unique role in communities and across the non-profit sector, by taking a bottom up, community-driven approach to social change. They provide a variety of services and supports, enable civic engagement, advocate for and support marginalized groups, and address some of the most pressing social issues facing our society” spoke David Allen, Executive Director of Volunteer Toronto.

Keynote speaker Kehinde Bah inspired attendees, describing his journey as founder of the Remix Project and the Grassroots Youth Collaborative, while poet David Delisca, performed a brand new work commissioned specifically for the event.

Guests were invited to explore four unique stations where they could sample some of the workshops and resources being developed for the project.

“Resources like these are often too costly for these organizations to obtain plus they tend to focus more on incorporated charities and non-profits,” said Claire McWatt, Grassroots Growth Project Coordinator, “The needs of volunteer-run groups are different and we wanted to support them in the best way we could.”
