Digital Storytelling Panel

Moderated by Rani Sanderson, Digital Storytelling Facilitator & Coordinator, Volunteer Toronto

Everyone has powerful stories to tell -- the ritual of sharing personal insights and experiences can be immensely valuable to both those speak and those who bear witness.

Digital storytelling is just one medium through which to tell and share our stories.  Digital storytelling is a community arts practice, rooted in personal narratives and photographs.  Workshops bring people together to create digital stories in the form of short, 2-5 minute videos.

The SharedTime Digital Storytelling Project is a 3-year venture run in collaboration with Volunteer Toronto and The Center for Digital Storytelling, and made possible through the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The project’s goal is to act as catalyst to enrich and enliven the Voluntary Sector in Toronto, enhancing the infrastructure and social fabric that make up this great city, by showing the impact of everyday volunteers and inspiring others to join the movement.

During the final phase of the SharedTime project non-profit professionals came together to create stories and learn how to facilitate digital storytelling workshops.  This panel invites some of these SharedTime participants to share their experiences and insight into the potential of using digital stories and running workshops in non-profit organizations.  They will discuss how and when a digital story can be used effectively; how this practice can be adapted for different groups/populations; what facilitators see as strengths and weaknesses, joys and struggles of digital storytelling.  If you’ve ever considered digital storytelling in your organization this discussion will provide you with some valuable insider information!
