Volunteers of Toronto
Why do people choose to volunteer?

In a time when our city’s unemployment rate is so high and news stations are poised to update us on the atrocities of the world, where do people find the time and emotional energy to volunteer?

Inspired by Brandon Stanton’s famous site Humans of New York, #VolunteersofTO provides a brief glimpse into the lives of ordinary people, just like you, working to address the problems that affect us all. Using a mixture of photography and first-person digital stories created by volunteers we hope to inspire you to take action and join the movement to build a better Toronto!

Volunteer to help find employment

Whether you’re unemployed or are simply ready for a career change, volunteering can help you on your journey…

Getting a job can be tough at the best of times, but did you know volunteering can improve your chances of landing that dream job?

Here are 3 ways volunteering can help.

1. You'll Grow Your Network

We’ve all heard about the “hidden job market,” how 80% of Canada’s jobs aren’t publicly advertised and it’s all about “who you know”. Volunteering is a great way of building your network and making more connections that can lead to a job. It’s especially effective if you choose a role that puts you in contact with people who know your industry well. By being a committed and reliable volunteer and ensuring those around you know you are job hunting, you’ll be amazed by how willing people are to share their knowledge, connect you to people they know or even give you some feedback on your resume.

2. You'll Build On Your Experience

Experience is everything when it comes to finding a job, and volunteering can be a great way of expanding on your skills. In a LinkedIn survey41% of hiring managers said they value volunteer experience as much as paid experience. So think about the job you are aiming for and look for volunteer opportunities that use those skills. Some roles will even offer training!

Want to be the next Jamie Oliver? Check out this role.

Want to be a Speech Pathologist? Check out this role.

If you can’t find a position that is similar to your dream job, then look for roles that have similar transferable skills or are in a similar industry. For example, a future fashion designer may struggle to find fashion designing volunteer roles so instead could volunteer for an arts and crafts program or approach clothing charities like New Circles and Dress Your Best to see if they are accepting volunteers.

3. You'll Demonstrate Care For Your Community

It’s all about standing out from the other candidates when you apply for a job, and increasingly more employers are looking for candidates who have a social conscience. It can be the distinguishing factor between you and a similar candidate who has just as much experience and education.

If you want to know more about how volunteering can help you find employment, come to our Information Session on Thursday, April 23 at 6pm.

Alternatively, make an appointment to spend 30 mins with one of our Referral Volunteers to discuss what opportunities may best suit your job search.
