This Friday, December 5th is the United Nations International Volunteer Day, an important day to recognize and celebrate the participation of people making a difference locally, nationally and globally.

The United Nations views volunteerism as a way for all people and countries to achieve peace and development through the elimination of poverty and reduction of inequalities and exclusion amongst our communities.

Every action counts, no matter how big or small. Get your volunteer actions counted, go to Volunteer Action Counts and let them know what you do to support your local and/or global community.

Volunteer Tip

Highlight volunteer experience on your resume

Most people who volunteer or have volunteered do not include these experience(s) on their resumes but did you know LinkedIn, the professional networking site, says 41% of employers and recruiting managers consider volunteer experience equally as paid work.

Volunteering is a great way to apply and hone existing skills while gaining new ones.  As such, it is acceptable and encouraged to include volunteer experience on your resume. When listing volunteer experience on your resume, you showcase the non-profit causes and programs you support and the skills you have applied and gained.

In doing so, make sure to clearly outline the responsibilities of the volunteer role and highlight the impact your volunteer contribution has made to the organization, programs or causes you support.

Volunteer Toronto is a charitable organization committed to supporting, creating and celebrating volunteerism in Toronto . Through our innovative approaches to volunteering and services that empower organizations to develop engaging volunteer programs, we are supporting our mission to  create the best possible volunteer experience.
