Community Engagement Summer Students

Volunteer Toronto is hiring two students to join our team as Community Engagement Summer Students for seven weeks this summer, as part of the government's Canada Summer Jobs program.

We’re a charity that connects volunteers to the causes that need them. We're looking for two bright, enthusiastic college/university students who are passionate about volunteering to help us with our outreach and serving members of the public who are interested in volunteering.

Reporting to the Community Engagement Coordinator, the Community Engagement Summer Students’ responsibilities will include:

  • Attending volunteer fairs, cultural events, community events and career exhibitions around the city to represent the organization and provide information about volunteering in Toronto
  • Researching volunteer fairs, cultural events, community events and career exhibitions taking place in the summer for the organization to be present at, particularly those in communities with high numbers of jobseekers and newcomers
  • Greeting members of the public who have questions regarding volunteering and providing assisted volunteer role search support to people who may face challenges such as persons with disabilities, newcomers to Canada, under-housed people, people who are not fully literate or computer literate, youth and seniors
  • Calling or emailing clients who have used Volunteer Toronto's services to assess whether they were successful in finding a volunteer position and what additional support is needed
  • Assisting in the planning and preparation of Volunteer Toronto large-scale events such as the Seniors Volunteer Fair
  • Supporting the Community Engagement Team in administrative functions as needed

Minimum Education/General Experience Requirements

  • Must be a full-time student attending a post-secondary institution and returning to school in the fall
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Warm, friendly and outgoing personality (not shy approaching and speaking to new people)
  • Ability to relate to people from all backgrounds, cultures and abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Professionalism and ability to adapt communication style to audience
  • Familiarity with volunteering; previous positive volunteer experiences
  • Ability to work well individually and in a collaborative environment
  • Friendly and professional demeanour both in-person and over the phone
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and judgment, and a high degree of initiative and versatility
  • Excellent organizational skills

The hours of work for this position are 30 hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.

The hourly rate for this position is $11.40 per hour.

Location: Students will work from Volunteer Toronto’s office at 344 Bloor Street West, Suite 404, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 3A7, but will often be required to attend events around the city by TTC. TTC costs will be covered by Volunteer Toronto.

Contract length:  Tuesday, June 20, 2017 to Saturday, August 5, 2017.

Please note:

Eligible applicants must:

(1) be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment

(2) have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year

(3) be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

(4) be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
