About the Workshops

The Grassroots Growth team is working hard to develop four training workshops to help grassroots groups effectively manage volunteers. You can attend our workshops from A to D to take you from starting your organization through to coordinating a large number of support volunteers, or pick and choose from the topics that are most relevant to you right now. Workshops will cover issues relevant to grassroots groups in Ontario today, including governance structures, volunteer burnout, and volunteer recruitment and retention – all from a grassroots perspective.

As a participant, you can expect to learn from your peers, think critically about and learn how to adapt traditional ways of managing volunteers, and develop a volunteer coordination strategy that works best for you and your grassroots group.

Have Your Say

By attending the pilot workshops, you’ll be able to help shape the structure and content of the training sessions, which will officially launch in September 2016 and run through to March 2017. We hope you’ll take this opportunity to include your voice in our project!

BONUS!  Pilot Workshop Boot Camp

Did you miss any dates and need to make them up? Want to attend all four sessions in one weekend? Them come to our Boot Camp!

Sign up for either 1 individual session, or both!

Workshop Descriptions

Workshop A: Grassroots Governance: Building a Structure That Fits (10:30am - 1:30pm)

Whether you’re just starting out with a group of friends and an idea or have been operating a volunteer-run non-profit for years, the right governance structure will help you and your volunteers to successfully achieve your goals. This workshop will cover writing effective mission and vision statements, how to develop a strategic plan, and different ways to organize and lead your grassroots group. We’ll also talk about how you can build legitimacy, looking at the pros and cons of traditional routes like incorporation and registering as a charity as well as considering other options to increase credibility.

This workshop is perfect for: Brand new grassroots groups, groups who are looking to review and revise their current organizational structure, and people who have an idea and want inspiration and direction.

 Other Pilot Workshop Dates:

Thursday, February 18 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at Volunteer Toronto

Saturday, February 27 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at North York Civic Centre

Workshop B: Managing the Core (2:30pm - 5:30pm)

No, this workshop isn’t about exercise – it’s about taking care of core volunteers, those wonderful people who take on leadership roles in a grassroots group. Because core volunteers are typically a small group (and often a group made up of friends and family), they’re particularly at risk of encountering interpersonal conflict and becoming overwhelmed. This workshop will look at strategies for managing conflict and avoiding burnout. It will also discuss ways that core volunteers can work productively together, including tips for holding meetings that stay on topic, setting boundaries, and how to proactively plan for that moment when a core volunteer decides move on from the group.

This workshop is perfect for: New and established grassroots groups who work closely with friends and family members, and anyone who wants to learn how to proactively manage conflict and burnout.

 Other Pilot Workshop Dates:

Saturday, March 5 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at Volunteer Toronto

Thursday, March 31 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at Scarborough Civic Centre
