Opening Keynote with Andrea Cohen Barrack, CEO of the Ontario Trillium Foundation

  • Volunteering is integral to building and sustaining community
  • The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) has commissioned a report on Toronto’s community vitality and what contributes to it
  • OTF is also making changes to become more transparent and accountable to the community – as well as launching new ways of assessing grant applications for volunteers in Summer 2015

Digital Storytelling Panel – Moderated by Rani Sanderson, Digital Storytelling Facilitator & Coordinator, Volunteer Toronto

  • Featuring panelists from a variety of organizations, backgrounds and audiences
  • Storytelling is a great way to share impact – especially when it comes from a person’s voice and with their own vision
  • Facilitating digital storytelling requires a safe space for telling stories – but also allows flexibility and creativity from participants in telling their stories
  • Digital storytelling introduces valuable skills for participants and opens new ways for people to express themselves

What’s the Big Deal about Content? – Presented by Celecia Partap, Marketing Communications Manager, YMCA of Greater Toronto

  • Social/digital media content is king because it tells the stories of who organizations are and what they do – 80% of the Canadian population is now online
  • Choosing marketing channels – to connect with volunteers and your broader community – should be based on your objectives and who your target audience is; think about who you want to talk to and what you want to say before broadcasting it across all channels
  • Plan a content calendar – choose your channel, when you’ll post, what your objective is, who your audience is – then create the content around that
  • Share your stories with existing and potential volunteers, give them new motivation to work with your organization through videos (a continuously growing medium), interactive websites/apps and more

Reconsidering the Value of Diverse Leadership – Presented by Michael F. Charles, Change DeZign Consulting

  • As Canada changes, organizations serving various communities must change to reflect the diversity of the people they serve
  • Leadership – upper management, Board members, staff and volunteers – that is diverse and culturally competent has a competitive advantage, particularly for non-profit organizations
  • Consider diversity and inclusion when recruiting and promoting staff and volunteers

Youth Engagement Panel – Moderated by Nicola Alexis-Brooks, Volunteer with multiple organizations

  • Featuring panelists from the Ontario Volunteer Centre Network, The Peer Project, FRESH Collective and Volunteer Toronto
  • Having a support person specifically for engaging, recruiting and working with youth is essential
  • Engaging youth to volunteer can teach them valuable skills for their careers – and volunteer roles – in the future
  • Recognize and work to develop youth volunteers, prioritize team building and leadership opportunities to give youth better growth trajectories as a volunteer and with your organization

The Value of Volunteering – Presented by Paula Speevak, President and CEO, Volunteer Canada

  • Understanding the value of volunteering for different kinds of volunteers and audiences can help your organization better measure impact
  • Gaining information from volunteers - especially those who have decided to stop volunteering with your organization – about their personal goals, motivations and why they continue or don’t continue volunteering can help you improve your program
  • Volunteer Canada will be working with volunteer centres across the country to support the collection of volunteer evaluation data and to share resources and skills for collecting and understanding this data

The Power of Collaboration – Presented by Melina Condren, Director of Engaging Organizations, Volunteer Toronto

  • Collaboration between volunteer programs can help to increase capacity, reach and impact while maximizing resources and time
  • There are four types of collaboration:
  • Knowledge Exchange – networking and communicating best practice
  • Shared Resources – sharing a volunteer pool, volunteer training from multiple programs or even a volunteer coordinator staff person
  • Joint Projects – working together on a short-term project or event, like holding a fundraiser for multiple organizations, or partnering with corporate volunteers to organize a special event for clients
  • Collective Impact – collaboration between organizations or volunteer programs to work towards common mission/goal
  • Collaboration with other organizations and volunteer programs can help your organization reach audiences you traditionally have difficulty reaching

Creating & Sustaining Meaningful Group Volunteer Opportunities – Closing Panel Moderated by Robin Cardozo, COO of SickKids Foundation

  • Featuring panelists from United Way, Youth Without Shelter, RBC Royal Bank and SickKids Foundation
  • Companies are now looking for long-term relationships with non-profit/charitable organizations – but set the expectations before group volunteers begin and ensure they meet the needs of your organization
  • RBC encourages group volunteer opportunities for their employees to connect with the communities they serve – they even offer grants for employee-led volunteer initiatives
  • Think about group volunteer opportunities that volunteers can do in their own office – sometimes bringing in a group to paint the office or move some items may not be beneficial to your organization or a good use of the volunteer’s skills
