To Volunteer Managers Around The Globe

In volunteer management, we talk a lot about how important it is for volunteers to understand the impact of their work, so that their experiences are meaningful and rewarding. But when’s the last time someone mentioned the impact of Volunteer Managers? For International Volunteer Managers Day, pause for a minute, and think about the huge impact you have on your volunteers, your organization, and your community.

Volunteer Managers are HR professionals, managing the process of volunteer engagement from position design, through recruitment, screening, selection, training, supervision, evaluation and recognition. They’re responsible for making sure the volunteers in their organization are doing high-impact, rewarding work that benefits the organization, the community, and the volunteers. This is a huge responsibility, and a critical one in ensuring program success. Without volunteers, many programs would cease to exist, or would lose integral parts of the services they offer.  Your organization needs volunteers to add value to its work and broaden its reach, and without the work you do, volunteers would be few and far between.

Odds are that there aren’t many people in your organization who affect so many programs and projects. Volunteer Managers need to be aware of everything an organization is doing, to be able to place volunteers in various programs where they can do the most good. Volunteer Managers need to collaborate with program staff to understand their needs and make sure that their volunteers are getting the support they need. Volunteer Managers have a huge influence on the programs of their organization, and therefore on the clients their organization serves.

Finally, let’s not forget the influence a great Volunteer Manager can have on the life of a volunteer. Volunteers often want to find purpose and meaning in their volunteer work, and a Volunteer Manager can make that happen. By having mission-driven volunteer roles and letting your volunteers know how important their work is, you can change a volunteer’s life. From the high school student completing their 40 hours of community service who develops a lifelong love of volunteering, to the retiree who wants the skills they took years developing to be put to good use in their community, volunteering can be an incredibly meaningful experience.

For International Volunteer Managers Day, Volunteer Toronto wants to say thank you to all the Volunteer Managers who work so hard to make volunteering such a valuable experience for everyone involved. The work you do touches many lives. A great volunteer experience can cause a ripple effect in your community, creating change, promoting growth, and paving the way for people to continue doing good work and helping others. And it’s you who makes that great volunteer experience happen. Thank you!
