Tyler Miller
Volunteer with Indspire

"I had full-time paid work in the past but had some difficulty managing it over the long term and I found myself quitting a good post. Volunteering gave me a way to start my working career path all over again since I relocated. Volunteering at a real workplace is like learning to get used to the water in the shallow end and mastering the doggie paddle. I appreciate the encouragement and pleasantness from the employers I currently and regularly volunteer with and it helps to combat burnout and boredom also."

The holiday season is here! At this time of year, many people seek out volunteer opportunities to feel connected to something bigger than themselves. Here at Volunteer Toronto, we are inspired each December as we see so many enthusiastic people willing to give back!

Sometimes though, the desire to help by serving meals or wrapping gifts outweighs the amount of opportunities available in the city. But don’t fret, here are some other ways you can give back throughout the holidays:

Check out our entire list of 36 Ways To Give Back on our website or follow the hashtag #31DaysofGiving on Twitter and Facebook!

Organizations We Love

The Kitchen Library is just like your neighbourhood library but instead of borrowing books you can borrow kitchen appliances and supplies! They currently have two library locations in Toronto. The Kitchen Library focuses on improving food and cooking education, supporting sustainable lifestyles and connecting their communities through library services and event programs.

Has Volunteering Fallen out of Vogue?

Recent studies have shown less people are volunteering now than in previous years. 12.7 million Canadians volunteered in 2013 compared to 13.3 million in 2010. So why are Canadians volunteering less and why should we still continue volunteer despite these reasons?

1,000 Youth Attend Volunteer Toronto's Youth Expo

You may remember us mentioning our Youth Expo in our October 13th newsletter. Well, we’re delighted to say it was a success! Over 1,000 high school students came to find volunteer opportunities and 72 of our Subscriber non-profits attended to recruit youth volunteers.

One high school student described the event saying “There was a great variety of volunteer opportunities. Everything from arts and crafts to helping young children. It made it easy for everyone to find roles that interest them.”

It will be sure to be repeated next year! Check out our photo album to see the Expo in action.
