It's Heart Month!

Every February, hearts become the centre of attention, not just for Valentine’s Day, but because February is National Heart Month.

Whilst we often focus on food and exercise to ensure our hearts stay in good shape, did you know that volunteering is also good for your heart? Research from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh shows that older adults who volunteer are 40% less likely to develop high blood pressure or hypertension. Who would have known?

Every day the Heart and Stroke Foundation works tirelessly to create a future where Canadians can live healthy lives, free of heart disease and stroke.

Volunteers are needed to help them build awareness and support their important work. Check out some of the current opportunities below:

Know an AMAZING volunteer?

Volunteer Toronto’s Legacy Awards recognize the time and effort volunteers contribute to making Toronto a better place. The awards will shine a light on 25 special people and formally thank them for their time.

Organizations We Love!

Get Involved. Inspire Children & Youth To Succeed. Change a Life. Become a Mentor.

The goal of The Peer Project is simple: help at-risk and newcomer children and youth find their way, by pairing them with a youth mentor who can offer support and guidance.

And it works. 98% of the kids in the program stay in school and out of trouble with the law.  It only takes 3 hours a week – the time it takes to watch a hockey game, go to a movie, or play some video games.

They pair individuals with a child (aged 6 to 15) based on common interests, background and place of residence. From there, the mentoring begins, with ongoing support from the project.

Share experiences, skills, and hobbies and inspire a younger youth to stay on the right track.  Volunteer on your schedule (3 hours per week) and close to home.

Contact Paula da Rocha at to learn more about how you can become a mentor!

  Fundraising For Grassroots Groups

WHEN: Tuesday, March 3rd
TIME: 6:30PM
WHERE: Canadian Management Centre

Funding is
always a hot topic for non-profit organizations. But groups that have no paid members of staff and may or may not be registered as a non-profit or a charity, often face massive barriers when it comes to raising the necessary funds to further their cause. So what options are there for raising money and what does one need to do to be successful?

Trailblazer Series is a set of leadership talks for people who manage volunteer-run non-profit organizations and groups in Toronto.

Volunteer Toronto is a charitable organization whose work strives to create a strong, inclusive, caring and committed community of people who willingly give of their time and energy toward building a healthy city. Volunteer Toronto’s programs and services support non-profits, charities and grassroots groups across the city in developing sustainable volunteer programs.
