Every year around the holidays, we get calls from eager people looking to give back during the festive season. We are inspired by this generosity of spirit and want to support and encourage it not just during the month of December but all year round.

Although many organizations are looking for support during the holidays, most of them need of help throughout the year. If you want to volunteer take the time to think about what cause interests you most, how much time you have to give and when you can give it. Knowing these three things will help you greatly in your search for that great volunteer position.

Right now there are many organizations looking for one or two day holiday volunteers. Check out these positions currently available on our website:

Eco Gift Wrapper - Toronto Green Community

Holiday Meals on Wheels Volunteers - Dixon Hall Neighbourhood Services

Holiday Tree Helper - Evergreen

If you don't have the time to take part in the more formal types of volunteering then we have some great ideas on our website on how to give back in your own way!

Featured Volunteer - Nicholas Graham

November's Featured Volunteer is 16 year old Nicholas Graham!

Nicholas is a grade 11 student at the York School in Toronto. He is an avid rower, ski coach and even speaks 3 languages! In grade 6, at the age of 10, he started volunteering at Mid-Toronto Community Services. Motivated by the stories his brother would tell about his experiences as a Meals on Wheels volunteer, Nicholas decided to get involved by shadowing him on his deliveries.

Throughout the years, Nicholas has increasingly enjoyed volunteering because he strongly believes no one should go hungry.  “It is wonderful to enter an apartment, to greet a client, to see their face beaming with joy and to have a little conversation with them.  It is such a small gesture on my part but it means so much to them,” says Nicholas. He is also appreciative of the staff and volunteers, “they are always upbeat and positive.  If I have had a bad week, just to see them and being with them makes everything better.  Their frame of mind is contagious and uplifting. I often get to speak with the volunteers and get to use my Spanish and my French! “

Nicholas' advice for those looking to volunteer is to “Choose something you enjoy because when you enjoy it, it’s an AMAZING experience.”
