Non-Profit Marketing Assistant (Summer Student Position)


JOB TYPE: 7 week contract, 30 hours per week

SALARY: $11.40 per hour

START DATE: Monday June 19, 2017

Volunteer Toronto is Canada’s largest volunteer centre with over 40 years of experience connecting volunteers to the organizations that need them. We aim to increase the positive impact that volunteering has on the City of Toronto through innovative initiatives that inspire, inform, and connect volunteers and the organizations that need them. We support non-profit organizations in adopting best practices in volunteer engagement through specialized training, resources and advice, and provide various other services to help them recruit and retain volunteers.

 JOB SUMMARY:       

Reporting to the Director of Engaging Organizations, the Non-Profit Marketing Assistant will work with the Engaging Organizations team to help expand Volunteer Toronto’s network of non-profit organizations across Toronto by supporting several marketing projects. The student will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in non-profit marketing and communications, membership engagement, and voluntary sector development.



-Assist with the promotion of our annual conference for volunteer managers and our subscription renewal campaign: 

  • Write and proofread content for promotional materials, newsletters, and social media
  • Make use of existing content from past conferences (video, photos, reports) to communicate the value of the 2017 conference
  • Reach out to non-profits within our current network by email or phone

-Support targeted recruitment campaigns to reach new non-profits across the city: 

  • Work with the Engaging Organizations team to develop a new marketing strategy
  • Research and compile a list of non-profits outside of our current network who may be able to use our services
  • Draft marketing materials to reach out to new non-profits

-Research external content to help us shape Volunteer Toronto’s content marketing strategy:

  • Conduct online research of other providers of services to non-profits
  • Identify trends and gaps in content delivered by those organizations
  • Compile findings into a brief report

-Identify new audiences for our on-demand and online training services:

  • Compile a list of conferences and other professional development events for volunteer managers
  • Brainstorm new audiences that might benefit from volunteer management training

-Support the Engaging Organizations team in administrative functions as needed



-Must be a student in a Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or other related program

-Excellent communication skills:

  • Concise, clear, and persuasive writing
  • Experience writing for an online audience
  • Must be comfortable reaching out to organizations over the phone

-Ability to work independently and as part of a team

-Ability to manage deadlines while working on several projects simultaneously

-Familiarity with the non-profit sector or experience as a volunteer

-Interest in developing knowledge and skills in non-profit marketing and communications, membership engagement, and/or voluntary sector development

Please note:

This position is part of the government's Canada Summer Jobs program. Eligible applicants must:

(1) be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment

(2) have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year

(3) be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

(4) be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
