The Day Program is a community program for older adults and seniors who are physically frail and/or have a cognitive impairment such as dementia or Alzheimer’s.  This program provides social and recreational activities, personal support and care, and respite for caregivers while helping clients achieve and maintain their maximum level of functioning.

Position Summary:

To support the ADS Program by preparing for and cleaning up after lunch service, participating in group socialization and program activities when able and needed. Volunteer support allows program staff to focus their time on program delivery and client care.

Summary of Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Lunch service duties including: setting tables, plating and serving lunch, preparation of refreshments, clearing tables, cleaning dishes and sanitizing surfaces.
  • Following proper health and safety practices which includes proper hand washing, use of provided hair nets when handling food and surface sanitation.
  • Interacting with clients during program and assisting with planned program activities when able.

Time Commitment:

  • One day per week between Monday and Friday from 10:30am to 2:30pm (some flexibility may be available dependant on program needs).
  • Minimum 3 month commitment.


  • North Site (the Village of Humber Heights): 2245 Lawrence. Ave. W, M9P 3W3
  • Central Site (Humbervale Place Seniors Residence):  1447 Royal York Rd., M9P 3V8
  • South Site (Alderwood):  525 Horner Ave., M8W 2B9

Orientation & Training:

  • Volunteers are required to attend a mandatory agency orientation session.
  • Onsite training to the program and volunteer position is provided.
  • Additional training workshops are offered throughout the year.


  • Must be flexible, patient, reliable and willing to fulfill the required commitment for this position.
  • Ability to complete routine tasks and adapt in a sometimes fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Must be understanding and comfortable working in an environment that supports seniors with cognitive and physical impairments; an interest in supporting seniors and their independence.
  • Willingness to complete kitchen tasks and follow health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work both in a team and independently with minimal direction and supervision when needed; willingness to take direction from staff.
  • This position can be physically demanding requires some frequent lifting when loading and unloading the dishwasher. Volunteers will be on their feet for the majority of their shift.  Must be able and comfortable to perform said lifting and be comfortable standing for the duration of the shift.
  • Must be able to communicate in English.
  • The following second languages are an asset but not required (based on location):  North site – Spanish, Italian; Central site – Ukrainian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Croatian, Indian, Yiddish, Mandarin; South site – Italian, Ukrainian, Portuguese, German, Arabic.

Dress Code:  closed toed shoes, casual and appropriate clothing with no offensive images or messages.
