Description & Details

The Adult Day Service (ADS) Program is a community program for older adults and seniors who are physically frail and/or have a cognitive impairment such as dementia or Alzheimer’s.  This program provides social and recreational activities, personal support and care, and respite for caregivers while helping clients achieve and maintain their maximum level of functioning.

Position Summary:

To support the ADS Program activities, bring joy and enhance the quality of life of seniors with cognitive impairments. Activities help individuals with a memory-related impairment re-connect memories, uncover emotions and bring a sense of personal purpose and contribution. Under the direction of staff and/or volunteers, clients use electronic tablets to enjoy music, explore photos and exercise their motor skills and play stimulating cognitive exercises through online games.

Summary of Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Engaging program clients through the use of electronic tablets.
  • Provide one-on-one (or in a small sized group) assistance with tablet applications and helping seniors in the program with online games and exercises.
  • Socializing with the client and providing encouragement while working together with the tablets.


  • Experienced and comfortable navigating an electronic tablet.
  • Must be flexible, understanding, patient, reliable and comfortable working and interacting with a senior population living with a cognitive impairment.
  • Able and comfortable completing tasks independently with minimal support.
  • An interest in supporting seniors and their independence.
  • Must be able to communicate in English.
  • The following second languages are an asset but not required (based on location):  North site – Spanish, Italian; Central site – Ukrainian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Croatian, Indian, Yiddish, Mandarin; South site – Italian, Ukrainian, Portuguese, German, Arabic.

Dress Code:  closed toed shoes, casual and presentable clothing with no offensive images or messages.

Program Locations:

  • North Site (the Village of Humber Heights): 2245 Lawrence. Ave. W, M9P 3W3
  • Central Site (Humbervale Place Seniors Residence):  1447 Royal York Rd., M9P 3V8
  • South Site (Alderwood):  525 Horner Ave., M8W 2B9

Time Commitment:

  • One day per week between Monday and Friday from 1:00 – 2/2:30pm (some flexibility available, a morning time between 10am-11:30am may be coordinated depending on the site).
  • Minimum 3 month commitment.

Orientation and Training:

  • Volunteers are required to attend a mandatory agency orientation session.
  • Additional training workhsops are offered throughout the year.

  • TTC tokens (if requested). 
  • Volunteers are eligible to receive a reference based on performance and after completion of minimum time commitment.
