MENTORING YOUTH IN TORONTO

Organization: Youth Assisting Youth-The Peer Project
Date Posted: 2018-06-18
City: Toronto
Location: Ontario
Country: Canada
Primary Category: Working with Youth
Type of Position: Long-Term (3 months or more)

Description & Details

Who are we?

The goal of The Peer Project is simple: help at-risk and newcomer children and youth find their way, by pairing them with a youth mentor who can offer support and guidance.

And it works. 98% of the kids we work with stay in school and out of trouble with the law.  It only takes 3 hours a week – the time it takes to watch a hockey game, go to a movie, or play some video games.

How does it work?

  • We pair you with a child (aged 6 to 15) based on common interests, background and where you live. From there, the mentoring begins, with ongoing support from us.
  • You will share experiences, skills, and hobbies and inspire a younger youth to stay on the right track.
  • You can volunteer on your schedule (3 hours per week) and close to home.

What’s in it for you?

  • In a tough job market, being a mentor to an at-risk kid shows community leadership, an attribute that all employers love.
  • You’ll make a real difference that counts in the life of a child
  • You get to do fun stuff for FREE, like attending professional sporting events such as Raptors or Jays games; our annual 3 day Summer Camp up North; and other cool field trips such as Canada’s Wonderland or Wild Water Kingdom

"The Peer Project gave me the chance to instill positive self-worth in a child… and gain a very dear friend.”                  – Krishana, Mentor

Attention self identified females:  Please note that we match based on same gender, and at this point 90% of our clients are boys, so we may not have a match for you; therefore, you might not get a response from us until we have clients in your area.
