Description & Details

Are you savvy with social media channels? Looking for a volunteer opportunity you can complete from home? Volunteer Toronto is recruiting for a new role—Digital Receptionists!

What do we do? Volunteer Toronto is a charity that connects people to volunteer opportunities in the city. We’re the first place that many people go to when they decide to volunteer. Our website is updated daily by 600+ non-profits who are actively looking for volunteers. As well as being a connector, we support the non-profit sector by providing advice and training to non-profits to ensure they are able to work well with the volunteers they have. We are champions of volunteering!

Role and Responsibilities:

As a Digital Receptionist, you’ll work with our Marketing & Communications team to help manage Volunteer Toronto’s social media direct messages. Many people contact Volunteer Toronto through social media for information on how and where to volunteer. As one of two Digital Receptionists, you’ll have access to our Facebook and Instagram social media accounts and will be responsible for checking direct message inquiries on a bi-weekly schedule. You’ll respond to direct messages by providing appropriate information/resources and contact information if follow-up is needed. Training will be provided on common questions and when to escalate inquiries to the staff team.

Additionally, once a month Digital Receptionists will facilitate a 24-hour Instagram question period through Volunteer Toronto’s Instagram stories, encouraging our followers to ask questions about how they can get involved. There are opportunities to expand Instagram story engagement, if a Digital Receptionist is interested and capable.

As you’ll be on the front lines of our digital engagement, a positive, respectful, and creative approach is required. This role also requires knowledge of social media channels—Facebook and Instagram—as well as access to technology (cellphone or laptop and the internet).

Every other month you’ll have the opportunity to connect in person with Volunteer Toronto’s Marketing & Communications team, including other social media volunteers. Digital Receptionists will report directly to Volunteer Toronto’s Director of Marketing & Communications.

Times and Commitment

Digital Receptionists will volunteer remotely, using their own cellphone or laptop to access Volunteer Toronto's social media channels.

The two Receptionists will commit to one week on, one week off support. During your week, you’ll check Volunteer Toronto’s Facebook and Instagram direct messages on a daily basis, responding to any inquiries. This daily check should take no longer than 10-30 minutes per day.

Additionally, once a month each Digital Receptionists will facilitate an Instagram question period. This requires the Receptionist to commit to 1-3 hours over a 24-hour period, of their choice. They will kick-off the question period and create stories responding to questions received.

The ideal volunteer for this role will be:

  • An excellent English language writer and communicator
  • Social media savvy—particularly with Instagram
  • Have access to a cellphone
  • Able to volunteer on a flexible schedule
  • Able to adapt information to meet different inquiries
  • Able to communicate without expressing judgement, stereotypes or prejudices
  • Preference for those able to commit for 6 months or more

Location

Digital Receptionists will complete their role remotely.

Training

One-on-one training will be scheduled in-person once successful candidates are selected. Training will include an introduction to Volunteer Toronto, our social media strategy, and practice in your role.

Perks

  • Gain experience with corporate social media strategy and engagement
  • Give back remotely and on a flexible commitment
  • Learn more about volunteerism in Toronto
  • Connect with staff and other volunteers interested in Marketing & Communications
  • Reference letters if requested (after 3 months)
