At Volunteer Toronto, the health and safety of our volunteers, staff, clients, and community partners is a priority. At this time Volunteer Toronto offices are closed to the public. However, both staff and volunteers continue to deliver services remotely for volunteers and organizations.

In response to COVID-19, Volunteer Toronto is in daily contact with the Ontario Ministry of Health as well as the City of Toronto and core social service agencies to understand how they’re adapting to protect and support vulnerable individuals. As agencies develop continuity plans, we will share safe opportunities for volunteers to meet these needs.

Additionally, we are engaging Toronto’s non-profit and grassroots groups in order to expedite volunteer recruitment for remote roles and project-based work. This effort will continue for the foreseeable future.

Individuals/Groups

As an organization, we encourage all individuals who are interested in volunteering during this time to access the below services and resources:

Organizations

We recommend that all volunteer-engaging organizations access our dedicated COVID-19 volunteer recruitment support, training materials, and strenuously encourage all groups to follow the below-listed safety measures to protect volunteers and clients:

  • Recruit volunteers for COVID-19 volunteer efforts by completing this short form. A staff member or volunteer will respond within 24 hours.
  • Consider opportunities for volunteers to complete tasks or participate in programs online. Remote volunteering or digital meetings (e.g. webinars) may be effective alternatives.
  • Access digital learning to sustain your volunteer program during the current state of emergency. Please sign-up for our Sector Space newsletter to receive timely updates on upcoming sessions.

In addition to taking these steps, we encourage all organizations to develop volunteer program continuity plans for up to one-year. As you evaluate considerations, keep the following in mind:

  • Create a plan to keep your volunteers updated and engaged on a regular basis, even if program activities are paused. Sharing resources, virtual learning opportunities and general updates about your organization on a consistent basis will help to foster community during social distancing.
  • Anticipate that program activities and events will need to be modified, cancelled, or postponed.
  • Consider opportunities for volunteers to complete tasks or participate in programs online. Remote volunteering or digital meetings (e.g. webinars) may be effective alternatives.

As the situation unfolds, we will share additional information and resources by updating this news item. Thank you in advance for joining Volunteer Toronto in doing all we can to keep our community safe and healthy.
