Toronto, ONVolunteer Toronto is proud to mark National Volunteer Week from April 19-25th, 2020 with the release of new data demonstrating how volunteers are supporting response efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a time of great uncertainty, without hesitation, nearly 100,000 Torontonians have stepped up to be there for those who need it most,” says Joanne McKiernan, Executive Director at Volunteer Toronto. “That’s resilience. That's community. That's Toronto. On behalf of our city—we’re saying thank you.

Volunteer Toronto, Canada’s largest volunteer centre, is actively tracking non-profit and grassroots community engagement to better understand how individuals are getting involved.

As of Sunday, April 19th just over 99,600 volunteers in Toronto have been tracked by the organization. These volunteers are delivering essential services, creating supplies, and providing remote care during the COVID-19 pandemic:

  •  50% are involved at the grassroots level
  •  22% are supporting food security initiatives
  •  18% are working with core social service agencies and non-profits delivering essential services
  •  10% are helping frontline workers
  •  7% of total COVID-19 volunteer recruitment has been supported by Volunteer Toronto’s COVID-19 Response Team

Volunteer data has also been broken down by Volunteer Toronto for each of Toronto’s 25 Wards:

  •  North Toronto: 31,650 volunteers
  •  East Toronto: 24,150 volunteers
  •  West Toronto: 14,670 volunteers
  •  South Toronto: 29,140 volunteers

Volunteer Toronto’s tracking efforts are ongoing. More than 200 individuals join the organization’s COVID-19 Volunteer Response Team every day. Thousands more are actively participating in grassroots organizing or are signing up to support non-profits, essential services, and government-led campaigns.

Volunteers play an essential role in keeping our community healthy and thriving 365 days a year,” says Maryann Istiloglu, Board Chair and volunteer with Volunteer Toronto. “They’re an integral and important part of community support. Yet it is when we face our most difficult challenges, we truly realize the need to be there for one another and the unique spirit of those who choose to volunteer.

Every year, up to 1.6 million volunteers give time to 14,000 non-profits and grassroots groups in Toronto. On Tuesday April 21st, during National Volunteer Week, Volunteer Toronto is challenging all Torontonians to share #CheerstoVolunteers in recognition of volunteers and their essential contributions to our city.

Transcare Community Support Services says...

Volunteers have been essential to our agency continuing to deliver Meals on Wheels. We have had a huge step up in applicants looking to spring into action and help out. Also we have had an increase in interest for other ways to volunteer. Mainly, caller reassurance has been more popular on both sides with clients and with volunteers. Clients need reassuring human voices. Volunteer Toronto has been a super hero star in helping our agency get the word out to connect us with amazing, willing volunteers. It shows the importance of team work, the human connected-ness that is necessary at a time like this.
