Holiday Volunteering Winter 2024

The holidays are  a great time to get involved, but did you know that many organizations need support beyond the holidays, year-round Becoming a volunteer, especially in the winter season, can create a hugimpact. Supporting vulnerable populations  and those who may need some extra support this season is an impactful way to make a difference. There are so many ways to get involved. Pick  your favourite option, or two, or three and get started as a volunteer this holiday season! Here are a few ways you get involved this winter and beyond.

 

🗓️ Attend One of Our Info Sessions: How to Volunteer During the Winter Holidays ❄️

In collaboration with the Toronto Public Library, join us to learn about the various ways you can get involved and give back during the holiday season and beyond. Discover how to start your volunteering journey this winter, how to plan and get involved as a volunteer, where to find opportunities and what to expect as you apply.

You’ll also discover thousands of free online resources through the Toronto Public Library to help you learn more about the city, make community connections, and access other helpful support services. This session is great for youth, newcomers and seniors and anyone who wants to make a positive impact on our city this winter.

💙 Microvolunteering Small Acts of Kindness that Make a Big Difference 🧡

  • Bring some blankets, pet food or toys to an animal shelter in your neighbourhood.

  • Organize a coat and winter clothing drive in your community, donating the items to a local shelter— (Find organizations in need, and items most urgently needed here.)

  • Make a care kit for the homeless with items like socks, deodorant, mittens and snacks—give them out directly or donate them to your local shelter or drop-in. (Find organizations in need, and items most urgently needed here.)

  • Drop off thank you cards for staff at non-profits or community centres in your neighbourhood.

  • Share your holiday volunteering or acts of kindness on social media (and tag @VolunteerToronto for a chance to be reposted!) and encourage others to give back too!



 

🌎 Other Ways to Give Back:  Help Your Neighbours This Season 🌨️
Give back to youneighbours on the grassroots level! Small acts of kindness, or ‘micro-volunteering” can create a large impact! Some ways you could get involved include:

  • Look out for neighbours who may require help raking leave or shovelling snow

  • Pick up garbage or litter at a clean-up event, or even as you are on a walk!

  • Donate lightly used items like clothing or furniture to shelters or those in need.

  • Share positive and uplifting thoughts and words with those around you

  • Promote peace and be a catalyst for change!

Many non-profits are still supporting clients, even though they aren’t able to engage volunteers. Consider donating as a meaningful way to give back this holiday season.
