    • corporations that recruit, train, and manage volunteers on behalf of non-profits (e.g. event management companies)
    • corporations that run initiatives or events wherein all or a portion of the proceeds go to charity (the non-profit receiving the funds may apply independently and oversee the recruitment of volunteers for such events)
  • Non-profit organizations which use, or intend to use, volunteer labour to help them develop into a for-profit corporation
  • Organizations facing labour disputes
  • Organizations who have had their charitable or incorporation status revoked
  • Political parties or campaigns
  • Individuals looking for support
  • Personal projects (e.g., writing a blog, providing mutual aid to a handful of neighbours)
  • Initiatives run by an organization (the organization itself must apply)
  • Organizations based/registered outside of Canada without at least one established chapter in Canada
    • Organizations that do not recruit Toronto-based volunteers are welcome to purchase a full subscription for the volunteer management training benefits but may not post volunteer opportunities on our platform.
  • Only organizations with annual revenues at or below $75,000 are eligible. If your organization is a registered charity, your annual revenue can be found on the Canada Revenue Agency's website. If not, please revue your organization's latest annual report, or consult with your senior leadership team before applying.
  • Every year, Volunteer Toronto reconfirms the revenues of all registered charities that hold subsidized subscriptions. If your organization's annual revenue has risen above $75,000, you'll be invited to purchase a full subscription or cancel your account until such time as your annual revenue dips below $75,000 again
  • Free live volunteer management webinars: Access all new and enhanced workshops delivered monthly for all levels of volunteer engagement professionals.
  • Exclusive subscriber access to LearnVT.ca: Get exclusive codes to access six updated courses on our self-directed online learning platform, LearnVT.ca.
  • Subscriber Circles: Stay in regular contact with friends and sector colleagues across the city during regular in-person discussions about important volunteer engagement issues.

If your organization doesn't have a website or any social media accounts, you'll be required to submit a reference letter, preferably on letterhead, from a professional or volunteer at another organization. Your reference cannot be someone you live with, a family member, or a partner.

Before you apply, we highly recommend establishing an online presence, as it's a great way to establish organizational legitimacy, raise awareness for your cause, and attract even more volunteers.

Only volunteer opportunities can be posted on VolunteerToronto.ca. This does not include:

  • Donation or funding appeals
  • Program participant opportunities
  • Paid positions
  • Paid or unpaid internships or co-op placements
  • Full-time positions or those which replace the work of paid staff
  • Positions in which volunteers deliver fee-for-service programming (e.g. volunteers delivering a paid tutoring service)

In-person volunteer positions must be within (a reasonable commuting distance of) the City of Toronto. The exception is positions which provide out-of-town room and board (e.g. Camp Counsellor positions, International Development positions)

Both the Ontario Human Rights Code and Volunteer Toronto’s Anti-Oppression Policy must be adhered to in all postings. Postings must articulate a justification for bona fide requirements related to protected grounds under the OHRC (e.g., citizenship, age, creed, race, gender identity and gender expression, sexual orientation, record of offences, etc.).

Positions which require that applicants contribute the following in order to volunteer may not be posted:

  • Membership fees
  • Donations
  • Training fees (unless specific reasoning is provided)

Only one account is permitted per organization.

Each account is administered by a primary contact. This is typically the person at your organization who will be posting the majority of your volunteer opportunities and who will be responsible for renewing your subscription each year, if applicable.

The primary contact can share their username and password with colleagues at their organization, but not with other organizations.

Up to 50 sub-accounts can be created per organization. Each sub-account holder will be able to post an unlimited number of volunteer opportunities. Sub-Accounts connected to organizations with full subscriptions are welcome to register for as many free volunteer management webinars are they want.

Full accounts which have not been logged into for 7 years or more will be deleted. Subsidized accounts which have not been logged into for 2 years will be deleted. Organizations can reapply at any time.

Full Subscriptions:

  • Expire 365 days after the date your payment is processed.
  • Can be renewed for $130 up to 30 days before their expiration date. You'll receive email reminders 14 days and 1 day before your expiry date. If you don't renew, you'll receive an email reminder 7 days after your expiration date.
  • At the time of renewal, organizations must update their organizational profile, complete our sector data survey, and agree to our policies.
